Preparing for Allergy Season: 4 Herbs for Seasonal Allergy Relief

As fall approaches many flowers and trees send their pollen soaring and decaying plant matter from the summer season becomes the perfect environment for the growth of mold. Airborne pollen and mold spores are some of the main culprits in the flare up of seasonal allergies. Luckily there are many plant allies that offer their gifts to help ease symptoms.

Allergies tend to be caused by the body's overreaction to small airborne particles. The immune system identifies the molds and pollen as dangerous foreign substances, triggering an inflammatory response, and the liver to release histamines. Depending on the severity of the reaction the body might show symptoms of a runny nose, sneezes, itchiness, congestion, and headaches. For different people, symptoms will vary in severity.

Our Allereze formula combines four powerful herbs that work together to support the liver and the immune system, offering anti-inflammatory, antihistamine, and decongestant properties.

4 Herbs for Seasonal Allergy Support

Stinging Nettles- nutritious and abundant

Stinging Nettles grow abundantly around the world from North America, to Europe, to Africa. For millennia this plant has been treasured by people as a nutritious and potent herbal ally. If you’ve ever unknowingly wandered past a patch of stinging nettles you may understand where they get their namesake. The hairs on the leaves and stems contain formic acid which when brushed against skin, causes a stinging sensation. However, the sting is easily removed through drying and processing.

We include Stinging Nettles in many of our formulas for its abundance of vitamins and minerals, as well as its anti-inflammatory properties. Allergic rhinitis is caused by the immune system creating an inflammatory response, leading to sneezing, headaches, and itchiness. We include nettles in our Allereze formula utilizing the anti-inflammatory action of the plant, helping to ease symptoms of seasonal allergies.

Goldenrod- The golden child of Autumn

Goldenrod captures the golden hues of the late summer sun. Blooming just as fall allergies begin, this medicinal plant is sometimes inaccurately blamed for the seasonal sniffles. Allergy symptoms are more likely caused by the simultaneous release of ragweed pollen and molds. Goldenrod is actually a powerful ally in easing allergy symptoms.

Goldenrod contains a potent antioxidant: Quercetin. Researchers believe Quercetin may prevent immune cells from releasing histamines, which cause allergy symptoms. Goldenrod offers powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antihistamine properties. It is also known to thin and remove excess sinus mucus and congestion.

Reishi- “The mushroom of immortality”

Reishi mushrooms, also called “the mushroom of immortality” is a bitter woody mushroom. Like most medicinal mushrooms, Reishi contains polysaccharides called beta glucans which support immune health and function. Reishi is considered a tonic for the immune system and is nourishing to the liver. For these reasons it is used in our allergy support formula.

It is also considered an adaptogen, supporting the body in adapting to stress. Calming to the spirit, Reishi has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a qi tonic, supporting health and vitality.

Baikal Skullcap- Chinese Skullcap, a member of the mint family

Baikal Skullcap is a supportive herb for the immune system. The roots are cultivated around the world, cherished for its medicinal benefits. A drying and warm herb, Bacial Skullcap is rich in flavonoids (types of antioxidants) providing anti-inflammatory and antiallergic properties.

Each of these herbs are powerhouses as stand alone allies, but together they create a cohesive formula that balances the body’s natural functions to ease and soothe allergy symptoms. The quality of the herbs used, our team’s personal relationship with the plants, and the care of our herbalists help us create extracts that embrace the gifts of the plants and offer support to people in times of need.

Bonus Tips for Allergy Season

Wear a mask. During allergen intensive activities such as mowing the lawn, weeding, or dusting; wearing a mask can block out some of the allergy causing pollens and molds.

Stay Hydrated. A dehydrated body more readily produces histamines, which cause allergy symptoms.

Wash them Away. Allergens can be reduced by washing your face after spending time outdoors, using nasal sinus rinses, and changing out of clothes you’ve worn outdoors.
